Scintilla are a 3 piece band from London and comprise of Alodie (vocals, guitar & keyboards), Helen (harmony vocals + bass) & The Nitram (drums). They produce some top pop tunes with tinges of punk and dreamy harmonies to die for. They recently featured on R1 on Session Unsigned and have a demo The Confessions EP out at the moment which you can buy from their website. The stand out track is Summer Fun which makes up for the total lack of summer this year.

Their next gig as on Friday July 1st at The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town, London. Go to their website and buy their EP and look out for their new songs including Kill David Hasselhoff. But first read the interview below....

Scintilla Interview

What things influence Scintilla (music or otherwise)?

Alodie: Nick Cave, Nick Cave, Nick Cave, Elvis, Joan Crawford, sherry, musicals, Fred Astaire, the Sex Pistols, The Birthday Party, T- rex, gardening, Regency romance, mounties, punk rock, a teensy smattering of hip hop and the Nicholas Brothers.

Helen: The Undertones, The Clash, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, cider, gardening, Hollywood beefcake, sci-fi, shiny things, fossilised insects, knick-knacks, mashed potato.

The Nitram: Frank Zappa, Smashing Pumpkin's drummer, John Bonham, Hip Hop, The future, being given free reign on the drums... and not being in a band with a load of blokes.

What is your band philosophy and/or motto?

"Et tu Brutus?" - "Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!" -
"Per ardua ad astra"...

Blimey, we should have done this interview a bit earlier when we were all sober
... Actually, our aim is to be a blindingly fantastic live band, with a moshing zone. And of course, to achieve world domination.

One of your new songs is called Kill David Hasselhof. Why should he die?

Well the answer to that really should be, "why doesn't he deserve to die"?? It's obvious isn't it?

1. "I'm good looking and I make alot of money" (D.Hasselhof)
2. "There are many dying children out there who's last wish is to meet me" (D.Hasselhof)
3. He can't act
4. He's vile
5. He has no sense of irony
6. He's crap at everything he does
7. He's a maverick dick and a noxious prick
8. because of his evil campaign to dominate TV airtime, *all* the time, planet-wide, with his insipid drivel

What do you think of the state of the UK music scene at the moment?

It's truly shit! If you're talking mainstream...

Are there too many girl/boy bands and cover versions?

Yes Yes and Yes, of course.

Is the popularity of Slipknot, Eminem & the other nu-metal bands a good or bad thing?

Well, where's all the British talent? The good thing is at least it gets young people out to see bands. At least it's an antidote to Steps and all that dross.

What is you No.1 must have?

...an audience?

Thing you hate most in the world?

Alodie: D.Hasselhof, hypocrisy

Helen: nationalism

the Nitram: boy bands, girl bands, accountants writing pop music

What`s your fave song of all time?

Alodie: Since I met you baby (Ivory Joe Turner?), if you must have just one.

The Nitram: Silverfuck (the Smashing Pumpkins)

Helen: Another Girl Another Planet (The Only Ones)

Which bands do you think are pushing music in different and interesting ways?

They must be there somewhere, but we don't seem to be coming across them... you tell us!

Here are a few who`s better questions....

Knightrider or Baywatch?

Shoot the telly.

Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan?

Bruce Lee

Marilyn Monroe or James Dean?

Marilyn Monroe, just

Quincy or Columbo?

Columbo, of course, are you mad?

Glastonbury, Reading or the V festivals?

the Nitram: Glastonbury

Alodie: Reading

Helen: don't like crowds

Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon?

the Nitram: Nickelodeon

Alodie and Helen: have only got old black + white televisions with coathanger aerials.

Blossom, Buttercup or Bubbles?

the Nitram: Bubbles

Alodie and Helen: definitely Buttercup, she's green and she's mean.
