Chicks
are a three piece group from Ireland that are proof that Riot Grrl is still
alive and well. They are exponents of lo-fi punk/pop and will take over the
world in 2000 (with the help of Pinky and the Brain or course!)
Annie
founded the group with her brother (he wrote some of the early songs). He lent
her a tape of Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear to show that she didn't need to play
to start a group. Annie asked her school friends Isabel and Lucy if they wanted
to be in the band they said yes and then Chicks was born. They recorded
their first demo after telling a record company they had already done 10 songs
and 20 gigs. Their first single "Criminales Caches Pistolas Y Chicas E.P."
(Spanish for Criminals Cars Guns And Girls) was released in June 1998 on Supremo
records and a second EP, "Little Monkey`s With Lots Of Money" also
on Supremo has been released. 1999 proved to be a quiet year on the Chicks front,
hopefully this year will be non stop action all the way.
I
first saw Chicks on the Joe Wiley show on Channel 4 where they did a live version
of Let Me go and I was hooked. I managed to get the 7" version of the EP
but not the CD version which wasn't too bad as vinyl it a lot cooler esp. coloured
vinyl. I couldn't wait to see them live and I thought I had my first chance
when they supported Ash but by the time I found out it had sold out Boooo! But
I did get to see them on their mini tour at Wolverhampton Varsity where I actually
met them and got all their autographs which was really nice. The gig ended prematurely
during You Wanna Be Me (I think) but they returned to do a cover of Rebel Girl
by Bikini Kill. There would have been loads of pics as well but my Sister couldn't
lend me her camera, sigh.
Check out the Rocca Rocca and Bubble Gum Crisis Chicks homepages for loads more information and stuff. There is also a Chicks mailing list where you can get all the latest news and talk about Chicks and other cool things with other fans.
